The Code of Ethics of GPM German Association of Project Management.

Preamble

In doing their work, project managers influence the quality of life of every single person in society. Given this far-reaching influence, project managers must base their actions and decisions on the principles of:

responsibility, expertise and integrity.

Compliance with the moral and ethic maxims of behaviour is the basis of evaluating all activities by project managers.

In this awareness, the GPM as professional association requires all managers and other persons involved in project management in the extended sense, to comply with the following Code of Ethics:

Responsibility Every project manager gives high priority to the public welfare and the health and safety of every individual. He strives to improve living circumstances and environment quality. His attitude is characterised by open-mindedness and tolerance of other cultures.
The project manager bases his actions and decisions specifically according to the success of the project he is implementing for his principal. He considers the trust placed in him by his principal and all others involved in the project as a prime asset.
The actions and decisions of the project manager are worthy of the high standing of the profession. In view of the fact that the success of a project is based on team work, the project manager gives due consideration to the interests of the team members, the other individuals involved in the project and his professional colleagues.

Expertise The project manager aims to achieve the greatest possible economic efficiency. In order to safeguard the required functions and qualities, deadlines and costs, he uses state-of-the-art methods, procedures and systems. He only assumes tasks which correspond to his experience and know-how. He takes early precautions to prevent any disturbances in the project. He reports openly and truthfully about conflicting objectives and problems in the project.
The project manager undergoes constant ongoing training in order to improve his own skills and always remain completely up-to-date. Accordingly, he also gives team members and staff the opportunity to pursue their own professional ongoing development and training. He ensures that he himself, the team members and everyone else involved in the project cooperates fairly and expresses objective criticism. At the same time, he protects his team members and everyone else involved in the project from unfair criticism. His behaviour is always objective and aimed at conciliation.

Integrity The project manager complies with the laws and generally accepted social values, wherever he is working in the world. In his actions and decisions, he always strives to fend off any damage from harming the wellbeing of society. He is prepared to render accounts for what he does.
In all his actions and decisions, the project manager remains independent and neutral, and is the loyal trustee of his principal. He heeds the confidential nature of information and protects the copyrights. He strictly refuses any form of unfair influence. At the same time, he himself renounces any means of unfairly influencing the interests of others.
The project manager assumes full responsibility for his actions and decisions. His professional standing is based on his own personal achievements. He does not enter into any unfair or dishonest competition with others.

In complying with these principles, every single project manager and the whole profession dictates his status and social standing.
